Russia is illegally jailing convicts of crimes in North Caucasus

Publication time: 11 January 2007, 10:52

Magomed Mutsolgov, head of the human rights organization "MAShR," has addressed the Spanish authorities not to extradite Murad Gasaev, an earlier detained resident of the Republic of Ingushetia. Mr. Mutsolgov is sure that a fair investigation of the crimes committed in the territory of North Caucasus is impossible in Russia.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported earlier that Murad Ahmedovich Gasaev, a native of Ingushetia, born in 1974, currently residing in Spain, may be extradited to Russia in the near future. Raissa Yurievna Chakhkieva, Gasaev's mother, a resident of Nazran, Republic of Ingushetia, has stated in her letter to the Russia-Chechen Information Agency that she leant from her relatives in Spain that her son was arrested on suspicion of involvement in a number of crimes in the territory of the Russian Federation. Later, she managed to learn that Murad Gasaev was announced in search in February 2006. The grounds were the evidences of one of the participants of the armed attack on Ingushetia in June 2004, who was detained by law enforcement bodies. The lady assumes that the evidences could have been obtained by tortures.
