Russia's Atomstroyexport will land the contract for building Bulgaria's second nuclear power plant in Belene, Bulgaria's National Electricity Company (NEC) decided, The Sofia Weekly reported.
Two companies were bidding in the tender - Russian Atomstroyexport and Czech Skoda Alliance. The offer submitted by Skoda Alliance was ranked second.
The public procurement order is for design, construction and commissioning of Units 1 and 2 of NPP.
The government decided to build two 1,000-megawatt reactors at the site at Belene in a project with a total value of between EUR 2 B to EUR 4 B.
Bulgaria had to close two of the six units of its Russian-built junk nuclear power plant in Kozloduy in 2003 to meet EU accession requirements. Two more Russian-built junk units will have to be closed on December 31, 2006.
