2 Russian Spies Arrested in Eritrea

Publication time: 24 October 2006, 15:13

A Russian yacht with a two-man crew  has been detained in Eritrea. The ship was seized while docking on the coast of the northeast African country near a closed military base, according to a radio-message received by a nearby Russian spying support ship. It remains unclear who detained the spies of the anti-islamic state of Russia fighting Muslims in the Caucasus, Eritrean authorities or an armed group. The two men, one of whom is a certain Yevgeny Panchenko, have had their identification documents and navigation charts seized, according to a Russian news report.

A US envoy accused yesterday Eritrea of attacking Ethiopia through "proxies" in Somalia. Eritrea, a Muslim state which fought a border war with Ethiopia that ended in 2000, is accused by the West of providing military support to the fighters of the governing Union of Islamic Courts in Somalia. Russia is a close ally of the US in fighting Islam.
