Americans arrest mentally ill resident of ar-Ramadi, then claim to have captured “terrorist commander.”

Publication time: 7 September 2006, 15:00

US occupation forces arrested a mentally deranged Iraqi man known locally as Farhan al-Khabil ("Crazy Farhan") who lives in ar-Ramadi on Wednesday afternoon, Septemner 6,  who is widely known as mentally ill and who is frequently seen wandering around in tattered clothes, playing with children, and eating handouts from local people.

The Americans beat him up, broke his nose and ripped his clothes off in the street.  They then arrested him and led him off to their base west of the city.

Two hours later, the Americans issued a communiqué in which they announced that they had arrested one of the "leaders of ‘terror' in the city" and that he had confessed to have personally carried out killings and bombings in ar-Ramadi.  The American announcement provoked widespread derision and laughter among city residents.
