A secret “OMON” prison is discovered in the Chechnya

Publication time: 8 June 2006, 19:33

On May 29 journalists and human rights activists entered the building where, until recently, an "OMON" unit from Hanti-Manciysk region of Russia had been stationed. Traces of blood and writings on its cellars walls left there by the abducted and detained people had been found. As well, a note-book containing 104 photographs and an enumerated list of people's names was discovered on the site. For now, the names appearing on that list remain unknown.

In the prior years that building was home to a facility for people with hearing disabilities, then a police station for Octiabrskiy district of Grozny (Jokhar) has moved in and later on the "OMON" unit from Hanti-Manciysk region of Russia had established its quarters there. A few days ago the "OMON" unit has vacated the building on orders from Ramzan Kadirov. Mr. Kadirov said that the building is in need of some repairs.

On May 30 members of puppet pro-russian local "parliament", journalists and the relatives of persons who had disappeared, gathered near the "OMON" building. In its cellars people were searching for the names of their abducted relatives and were identifying the found photographs. The latest inscriptions found on the walls are dated May 15. One of the former detainees told human rights activists that he personally saw three women there that are amongst those who are considered disappeared. According to that person the detainees were subjected to the cruel tortures, his cellmate leg was hacked at with an axe.

Later on the note-book with photographs was handed to an investigator from the DA office. People went home with an intention to gather again near the "OMON' building on May 31. They want to make sure that the structure would not be demolished and that the evidence it contains would not disappear.
